Let the Music Move You
The Power of Song
Not surprisingly, studies show that music can lift moods, combat depression, increase dopamine (the “feel good” chemical), lower cortisol and inspire us to action.
I remember a time when I had to deliver a presentation during a retreat of 400 partners of a major law firm. My session was early on a Saturday, and as you can imagine, there was much pressure to impress.
That morning, I woke up early and headed to the gym, as exercise has always been a good stress management technique for me. I was so wound up that I ended up running on the treadmill. (By the way, I hate treadmills and running, but I had too much energy that needed to be expelled.) I remember that the Kelly Clarkson song with the line “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” came on. I felt every word of her chorus, was fist bumping my hand in the air, simultaneously crying and smiling and releasing all of my stress.
I had a similarly emotional reaction to a song this past week. I hadn’t heard this song in awhile, and the chorus brought me to tears, again during a workout. It is Rachel Platten’s “Fight Song.”
I felt the song for me. I felt the song for friends who are struggling with personal transitions. I felt the song for Black History Month. I felt the song for America.
I feel the song for all of my fellow Joychievers.
I love the way that music can move you, and if you haven’t heard Rachel’s song in awhile, click the video below to feel it with me.

New name for a recurring issue
Are you familiar with this feeling? When you experience a little bit of stress, you perform highly. But when you’re too stressed, life feels really strenuous or you shut down. Conversely, when you’re not experiencing any stress at all, it’s difficult to feel motivated.
Here at Joycheiver, we take stress and the negative effects it has on people’s lives very seriously.
It’s wonderful to truly unplug.
